The present operational area of KSS is mainly Sarguja recently renamed as Ambikapur District which is located in the northern part of Chhattisgarh.

The geological profile of our operational area is the hilly extension of Chottonagpur plateau with less fertile laterite soil and bushy forest terrain. The high-lands of the area have peculiar 'pat formations' – highlands with small tablelands. High lands are mostly covered with rocky wastelands. Central Sarguja is a low basin through which the Rihand and its tributaries flow.

The climate of the area is dry which has made the region rather drought prone. During the summer season the highest temperature raises up to 46C during April-May and the lowest temperature falls to about 5C in the winter season of December-January. The rainfall in the area is the highest in July and August. Agriculture depends on monsoon.

As for natural resources mainly forest products are available. About 58% of the area in the district lies under forests, while some coal and bauxite are available as mining resources.

As livelihood greater part of the population is daily wage earners in the fields of agriculture and industries although a substantial part of the population lives upon animal husbandry and allied trade. Agriculture is not a potential livelihood due to barren nature of soil, unavailability of water for irrigation in most of the places. There are some tribes who are nomadic type, living basically upon forest by collecting forest produces.

Socio-Economically most of the population belong to backward communities among whom the main concentration is Pahari Korwa tribe. Majority of the people of the area are very poor. They are deprived of the basic amenities of life and are socially neglected. Although the average literacy rate is 76% , yet the literacy among the tribal population is very low. Population density of the area is 210 /sq.km . The overall profile of community health is pitiable. The nutrition level of the children is miserable. People, especially of tribal communities believe in witch-crafts and other superstitions. The women and the children are the worst sufferers.
